Nursing Mother

Here’s something kind of cute. This is a breastfeeding doll. These are hand-made by a women’s group in Saudi Arabia to raise awareness about breastfeeding. Breastfeeding rates in the Gulf are still pretty good, but they are falling as the economies modernize. This doll is part of an effort to slow or stop that trend.

Assalaamu alaikum,

That is cute, masha'allah. It seems that Kuwaiti women are starting to breastfeed more, but I had heated arguments with the nurses in the hospital (all 4 times) when I told them not to give my babies bottles. Normally, they just give them formula whenever they cry - those free samples that were supposedly banned years ago...

And a lot of women think that since it's scientific and modern, it must be better than breastmilk - although this does seem to be changing slowly, alhamdulillah.

We found the nurses (and doctors)very tractable, we just told them what we wanted, and that's what we got. We used a private hospital.

Normally I'm not a big fan of private hospitals here, but for childbirth or other routine things they are great.

Assalaamu alaikum,

The goverment hospitals did stop giving out the formula a few years ago, although they still allow women to bring their own. But as far as I know, the private hospitals are still giving the free stuff, and the women come home with samples. I got some in the bags of samples, but I always left it.

The idea of the dolls is very interesting and a good idea to promote breastfeeding.

I would love to make one of these dolls for my daughter. Here in Libya many women are finding it so much easier to breastfeed. Most of the time I think it's just laziness and wanting to be able to go out with out dragging along a baby.

Thank you for this wonderful insite to life in Qatar. Come visit my blog to see my world in Libya.

Where did you get the doll? I live in Doha, and would love to get one for a midwife friend.

Those dolls are a terrific idea. I breast fed both my kids and I found it far easier going places as a breast feeding mother than I would have otherwise. Carrying all the bottles and formula is a pain, if you breast feed, you can't lose a bottle, it's very sanitary and all you have to carry is changes of diapera and clothing. The babies stay healtier too!
